Natural History
Native to the savannas and scrublands of East and Southern Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique), P. murinus is an opportunistic burrower that creates extensive silk-lined tunnel systems beneath rocks, logs, and termite mounds. This ambush predator is known for its aggressive feeding response and willingness to defend its territory.
Husbandry Requirements
- Enclosure: 5-gallon terrestrial setup with 4–6 inches of substrate for deep burrowing
- Substrate: Coconut fiber or topsoil mix; keep dry to slightly moist
- Temperature: 75–82°F

- Diet: Crickets, roaches, superworms; aggressive feeder
What to Expect
This is not a beginner species. P. murinus is famous for its speed, unpredictability, and willingness to bite without warning. Unlike New World species, Old World tarantulas lack urticating hairs and rely on potent venom and defensive strikes. The OBT will bolt, threat-pose, and bite if provoked. However, for experienced keepers who respect its boundaries, this species offers stunning coloration, impressive webbing, active behavior, and one of the most rewarding challenges in the hobby.
All specimens are captive-bred and shipped with care instructions. This species is recommended for advanced keepers only.
